New Delhi: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has called upon other trade unions and workers in the civil aviation sector to unitedly resist the Government’s reported move to privatise 15 major airports.
Referring to media reports that the Government was planning to invite global bids for six airports -- Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow and Guwahati-- CITU General Secretary, Tapan Sen, said in a statement that, “It is surprising that, in this beginning round, the Government has selected such airports that have “substantial commercial activities” and high revenue earnings” to hand over to private hands.
Sen said Rs 3,700 crore had been spent by the AAI on the modernisation and renovation of the Kolkata and Chennai airports as also thousands of crores of public money been spent for modernising other 13 airports.
