‘Flighty’ errors confuse Pune airport passengers

Pune: In a series of embarrassing gaffes, flight information boards at the Pune Airport have been displaying ‘technical glitches’ as officers put them for the last three weeks at least, with names of destinations being projected with errors from the comic to the downright ridiculous.
Ponnappa, a cartoonist returning from the Maldives on Sunday, is one of the passengers who noticed the spelling errors on the arrival board. “Delhi was spelt as Demhi, Chennai as Channie. I was surprised; when I questioned personnel at the inquiry desk, they brushed it off as a technical ‘glitch’,” he said.
Wildlife conservationist Pooja Bhale, who was at the airport at 4 am this Friday to pick a friend up, said she thought the jumbled names on the board were her imagination at first, but soon realised they were actual errors.
An airport official, who refused to be named, had an  explanation: “The CNS department looks after the board, which functions on an electro-mechanical system. Names are pre-fed into the system, so there are definitely no typos or spelling errors.
However, the reason for the gaffes is that the flaps attached to the screens on which alphabets are written fall incorrectly. This is a dated system of display, which needs to be changed now. Rains and humidity add to problems. We have applied for a replacement and are hoping to get one soon.”
