Gold worth Rs 19L smuggled in as laptop battery from Dubai

Ahmedabad:  Gold has secretly been flying to Gujarat from Dubai. Some passengers from Dubai, looking to earn a quick buck on the sly, have begun smuggling gold by air, hidden in a variety of electronic goods.
The racket was exposed after a consignment of gold worth Rs 19 lakh was recovered from the air cargo of a flight from Dubai. The police, however, have not been able to trace the consigner or consignee. "The address and name provided for the air cargo were cross-checked, but they proved to be fake," said an official of the crime branch.
Though the cargo was headed for the Sardar Vallabhbhai airport at Ahmedabad, the consignment got diverted to Delhi. Crime branch officials who already had a tip-off about the consignment informed their counterparts in Delhi. A joint team of Delhi police and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) scanned the flight's cargo and found a packet containing a laptop. The laptop's battery had been replaced with a gold bar wrapped in aluminum foil.
