Maldives must end the tensions that arose between India following the termination of the contract with Indian Infrastructure giant GMR to develop the Male airport, presidential hopeful Abdulla Yamin said Sunday.
Speaking at an event organised by his Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to celebrate the start of the holy month of Ramadan, Yamin said the abrupt termination of the GMR contract had severely strained ties with India.
However, he was quick to insist that restoring the GMR deal was not the solution to revive flailing ties with the south Asian superpower.
“The solution for that is also bringing PPM to power,” he said.
Urging PPM supporters to continue with the campaign for the presidential elections slated for September 7 even during Ramadan, Yamin pointed out the present plight of the Maldivian people. He said the continued need to rely on foreign aid should not be the way of a self sufficient economy.
