Man arrested for smuggling gold bars worth Rs 40 lakh at IGI airport

New Delhi: A man was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold bars valued at about Rs 40 lakh by hiding it in his lower abdomen at the international airport in Delhi. Kalander Abbas Jahir, a resident of Tamil Nadu, had arrived in Delhi from Dubai on Wednesday. He was intercepted by customs officials and his baggages were searched following an intelligence.
"During x-ray of his body at Safdarjung Hospital, some foreign body was noticed in his lower abdomen. After ejection, these foreign bodies were found to be fifteen rectangular gold biscuits collectively weighing 1.5 kgs," a press release issued on Friday by the customs said. The value of the seized gold is Rs 36.39 lakh.
