Penalty for grounded baggage in Chennai airport

Chennai: If you think a gunny bag containing tamarind would be found only at a wholesale market or a go down, think again! On Friday, one such bag was found inside the Chennai international airport terminal, unattended to.
Likewise, officials at the city airport find every day a minimum of six items, three each in domestic and international terminals, left behind by the passengers.
While most of the passengers return to collect their baggage, the airport authorities are forced to follow the standard operating procedures like calling the bomb disposal squad and checking the contents of the left behind items, before depositing it with the stores department, who after three months, auction it through Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation of India (MMTC).
