Radar integration shores up stricken Nagpur ATC

Nagpur:  The Nagpur Air Traffic Control (ATC) radar shut down for eight hours on June 25 after a lightning strike. However, the ATC was able to continuously provide correct and safe directions to hundreds of aircrafts flying over the city. This capability was the direct result of the new technology implemented at Nagpur airport ATC and its communication and navigation surveillance (CNS) by the Airports Authority of India. The systems have helped tide over many crisis during the troublesome monsoon the region is facing this year.
"Due to the integration of radars at Nagpur, Jharsuguda, Hyderabad and Bhopal, we faced no problems at all. Even though our radar had gone down, the other three radars were functioning and covered the entire region," said AK Verma, airport director.
"If the radars had not been integrated under the INDRA system, in such an emergency the aircraft would have been directed by the ATC staff manually, based on their perceived location of the plane and information given by the flight crews. This increases the margin for error and there are delays in flights," said Shafique Shah, officer on special duty, AAI.
