Smaller airports yet to take off

Bangalore: Aviation in Karnataka took to its wings much earlier than most states in India. The Hindustan Aircraft Limited (now Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) was established in Bangalore during the 1940’s and air strips were developed in Bellary, Mysore and Belgaum in the pre-Independence days itself.
However, in the last decade, barring the development of the Bengaluru International Airport, which again is the country’s first greenfield airport, the state has nothing much to boast of when it comes to establishment of new airports or enhancing air connectivity within the state.
The languishing of Gulbarga and the Shimoga airport projects for over a year now and its promoters initiating legal action against its joint venture partners involved in the projects is an example of how the dream of having enhanced air connectivity between the Tier II cities of the state has failed to take off.
