Ahmedabad airport to install new radar soon

Ahmedabad: The city airport is set to replace its 15-year-old radar with a new, more capable radar system in three months. The installation of the new radar will begin at the Sardar Vallabhbbhai Patel International Airport on August 23.
As part of the airport's modernization, which began in 2010, the current Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR) will be replaced with next-generation Mode S Capable MSSR. "We have already got an automated air traffic system and the setting up of the new radar is the next big step," said Aryama Sanyal, joint GM, head of Air Traffic Services in Ahmedabad.
The installation will begin on August 23 and the radar is expected to be operational from the first week of December. The Mode S capable radar, built by ELDIS Pardubice of the Czech Republic, will provide flight locations up to 300 nautical miles from Ahmedabad, while the old radar could do so up to 200 nautical miles.
