Aviation ministry, Airports Authority of India fail to fix responsibility for airport mess

Chennai:  Poor quality and dismal maintenance continue to plague the new domestic terminal of Chennai airport which was opened more than three months ago. But, nobody has been held responsible for the mess.
Twice, false ceiling panels have collapsed in the new domestic terminal but none of the Airports Authority of India officials who were responsible for the construction have been pulled up. AAI is not able to penalise the contractors because the warranty period that they had on the contracts expired as the building was handed over more than a year ago.
Sources said AAI had not awarded the maintenance contract for the building though it had been more than three months after operations began. "Maintenance needs to be outsourced because a small set of AAI maintenance engineers are not enough to handle such a vast building," said a senior AAI official.
