Extra airline charges, no extra comfort

Ahmedabad:  Unbundling of services - like checking in of baggage and the allocation of preferred seats -may have propped up revenues for airlines, but the additional charges are pinching the pockets of flyers. Besides, the charges are leaving flyers dissatisfied with the overall experience of travel.
A survey carried out by a professor of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, Prof Dheeraj Sharma, finds that flyers are not getting the bang for their buck. The survey was conducted along with a research associate from the institute, and interns from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.
In May 2013, the civil aviation ministry had said that airlines could unbundle their services, making passengers pay separately for preferred seats, and meals and drinks except water. Separate charges were also allowed for carrying check-in baggage, carrying sports equipment or musical instruments, carrying luggage that is specially declared valuable, and for the use of airlines' lounges.
