Flights may be rescheduled for runway repair

Chennai: Airports Authority of India (AAI) is gearing up to repair the main runway of Chennai airport as the secondary runway, which can be used as a backup, may be opened soon.
The main runway requires immediate repairs as it has been used constantly for the past three years since the second runway was closed for extending it across Adyar river.
Sources said a tender has been floated to identify an agency to do milling work and resurfacing of the main runway. "The work is expected to be awarded by end of this month," said an AAI official.
Main runway is currently maintained once or twice a week during lean hours in the afternoon as it is used extensively. On an average more than 300 planes use the runway daily. Earlier, smaller aircrafts used to land and take off from the second runway.
