Garbage leads to 8 bird-hits this year near airport

Chennai:  After a lull of more than a year, bird-hit incidents have started to rise at Chennai airport. In a bid to curb this menace, the Airports Authority of India has again requested Cantonment Board of Pallavaram and other neighbouring municipalities to streamline their garbage disposal system.
"There were more than eight bird-hits since January. A few were inside the airport while a majority was outside the airport when flights were either landing or taking off from the main runway. A number of suspected bird-hits are reported because pilots sight birds while landing," said a senior AAI offical.
Bird sightings over runways have increased as new residential areas have come up in Pammal, Manapakkam, Kolapakkam, Pazhavanthangal and other areas around the airport. These neighbourhoods fall within the 13 sqkm area that should remain free of garbage dumps and slaughter houses.
