Gold worth Rs 1.5 crore seized at Trivandrum International Airport

Thiruvananthapuram: The customs (preventive) commissionerate on Wednesday intercepted two passengers who arrived at the Trivandrum International Airport from Dubai on Emirates flight EK 520 and seized gold bars weighing 5 kg, worth Rs 1.5 crore, making it the biggest haul in Kerala in the past 10 years.
Three gold bars were seized from Muneer Ali Kunju, hailing from Alappuzha, and two bars from a Palakkad resident, Naushad Aradikkuzhiyil. Each bar weighed one kg. The 11-member customs preventive unit acted on specific information that two people were trying to smuggle gold into Kerala. As per the rules, an Indian who has gone abroad and stayed there for at least six months is entitled to carry with him a gold bar weighing not more than one kg. But, he has to declare the same and pay 8% duty.
The team, which was waiting at the exit (arrival) gate of the airport, monitored whether the two passengers declare their goods. However, this was not done. The team quickly moved in and took possession of the baggage around 9.30 am.
