Mumbai: The operator of Mumbai airport plans to charge passengers and airlines more once a state of-the-art terminal is opened to traffic next year. Mumbai International Airport (MIAL), the GVK-led consortium that operates the airport, is revamping the airport with an outlay of Rs 12,500 crore. Last year, it had increased tariffs by 150%, citing cost-revenue gap.
"Putting the terminal on stream will increase tariffs, though it is difficult to determine by how much," a top MIAL executive, who did not wish to be named, said. The tariff increase, if cleared by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA), will take Mumbai airport past Delhi in airport charges. The airport revamp, which will include a four-level , stateof-the-art terminal to integrate international and domestic airline operations, will increase the annual passenger handling capacity by over a third to more than 40 million.
