Probe shows oven overheated during Dreamliner flight, aircraft not faulty

Mumbai: A preliminary inspection of the Dreamliner jet that was grounded when an oven emitted smoke last month has revealed that the problem lies with the oven, not with the aircraft.
Following the inspection by a Boeing India team and Air India engineers, a mail was sent to the national carrier's director engineering K M Unni, about precautions to be taken while using the oven. For instance, Air India crew have been directed to not use the steam heating mode on the oven.
On July 24, an oven overheated on a New Delhi-Kolkata flight and emitted smoke. There was no fire and the plane carrying over a hundred passengers landed safely.
Boeing officials have been cautious as the oven incident follows a fire earlier this month on a parked Ethiopian Airlines-owned 787 Dreamliner at London that caused extensive damage to the plane, and the fact that the entire global fleet of Dreamliners was grounded for three months earlier this year due to separate battery-related problems.
