Security tightened at Begumpet airport

Hyderabad: In the wake of increasing threats to Hyderabad, security at the old airport in Begumpet has been tightened considerably with increased patrolling and restriction in place over civilian movement.
After the airport was shifted to Shamshabad in 2008, the lax security resulted in civilians flocking to the premises for jogging and morning walks. The internal roads and the parking area inside the airport was a hit with hundreds of walkers from surrounding areas. Many used the premises as parking lot and sometimes even miscreants used to find their way inside.
In December 2012, a chopper used for ferrying chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy was gutted along with six other aircraft in a blaze at this airport. This raised suspicion about possible sabotage and forced authorities to take stock of the security scenario.
