Mumbai: As part of its fleet expansion for 2017, budget airline SpiceJet is likely to stitch up an order for close to 50 narrow body aircraft, according to a report from the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation India (CAPA) released on Monday.
“SpiceJet is currently developing a fleet plan for beyond 2017,” the report said. “CAPA expects that SpiceJet, which currently has an all-Boeing narrow body fleet, is likely to finalise an order in August/September-2013 for close to 50 A320s and A320 neos, subject to resolving a few critical issues.”
The report even went to the extent of saying the airline at some point may plan to eventually make a transition to an all-Airbus narrow body fleet. “As a result of the move to Airbus narrow bodies, we do not rule out the possibility of SpiceJet transitioning to ATRs in the medium term for its regional fleet, which currently consists of 15 Q400s,” the report read.
SpiceJet reported an almost 10% decline in profit for the first quarter of the fiscal, owing to a weak rupee and a costlier fuel. Net profit of the airline dropped to Rs50.6 crore from Rs56 crore a year ago.
