Kanpur: The state Cabinet on Tuesday paved the way for a modern airport in the city. The Cabinet decided to provide 50 acres of land free of cost to Airport Authority of India for the modernization and expansion of the Chakeri airport. Besides, the government also decided to provide land for three more airports in the state.
The AAI has already identified around 100 acres in Sheikhpur and Mayaiya villages for the expansion plan. Both villages are adjacent to Chakeri airport and a report regarding the land has been sent to the Union civil aviation ministry. Sources in the ministry said that expansion and modernization of the airport would enable direct air links to Gujarat, Tamilnadu and Maharashtra.
Kanpur airport, also known as Chakeri airport, was originally designated to Indian Air Force. Regular flights were operated from the airport to Delhi, Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai in 1970s. However, due to some reasons the flights were later confined to Kolkata, Allahabad and Delhi only.
