Mumbai: Helicopter pilots do not want it, but the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has decided that a helipad is required close to the secondary runway at Juhu airport.
The AAI will carry out a safety assessment study in Delhi on September 17.
A safety assessment involves documentation of every stakeholder's view of the pros and cons of the proposed project. Even the smallest of changes at an airport calls for a safety assessment.
"This could be a preliminary meeting, but for every such meeting they should call major stakeholders, that is, the helicopter pilots," an AAI source said. "AAI sent out an invite to stakeholders only on Thursday evening, after the industry learnt about the study and protested on learning that that they will be kept out of the meeting."
Capt Udai Gelli of the Rotary Wing Society of India, an organization representing the helicopter industry, said: "When we learnt about the safety assessment study, we insisted that the stakeholders be invited, which is when AAI decided to call us and other oil rig operators like ONGC."
