Kozhikode: Air India Express, the budget carrier launched to provide relief to expats in the Gulf, seems to be fast shedding its low-cost tag. The airlines now charges higher fares than the group's full-fledged airline Air India on flights from Malabar to various sectors in the Gulf.
For instance, while the Air India Express (AIE) flight from Karipur to Dubai charges Rs 25,482 for its schedule on September 18, the Air India (AI) flight on the same day to Dubai charges just Rs 22,348.
Even if the booking is done a month in advance, the rates offered by Air India Express are higher compared to Air India. When Air India Express charges Rs 11,839 for its Kozhikode-Dubai flight on October 10, its flagship carrier, Air India, charges Rs 9,063. Air India Express operates 52 weekly flights to eight destinations in the Gulf from Karipur while Air India operates 14.
