Chennai airport set for Haj pilgrims

Chennai: With Haj pilgrims all set to start their journey to Mecca from Chennai on September 24, city airport officials are gearing up to put up special tents for pilgrims and their relatives outside the terminal.
“We might not be able to provide them air conditioned tents as made available at the Lucknow airport, but then we will try to make the required facilities for  pilgrims to wait and take rest before boarding their flight,” said Harbhajan Singh, assistant general manager (PR), Chennai airport.
Further, he said that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) would provide seating arrangements inside the tent for relatives and friends who come to the airport to send off the passengers.
“We have also found a designated prayer area for checked-in passengers to offer their regular prayers throughout the day. We will also provide them mats,” he further said, adding that Haj pilgrims would also be given priority during immigration and baggage clearance.
Meanwhile, the Haj Committee of India vice-president A. Aboobacker told Deccan Chronicle that about 4,000 people including those travelling through private operators would leave for Haj pilgrimage from Tamil Nadu this year.
