Customs to upgrade detectors at Kochi airport

Kochi: The Customs department has decided to beef up the security at Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery with higher quality metal detectors. This decision comes in the wake of the rising number of gold smuggling incidents through the airport.
Soon to be  installed is a metal detector that has better resolution and higher efficiency as the department hopes to bust more smugglers. C. Madhavan, the Deputy Commissioner of Customs, said the new detector, which costs Rs 5.5 lakh, would be able to identify the area where the gold is concealed.
“Normal metal door frames make a beep sound when they detect a metal. It can be a belt buckle, watch or anklet. The detector never points to where the metal is placed on the body.
