Mumbai: Demand for the festive season has still not caught up, but propelled by an aviation turbine fuel price hike and devaluation of the rupee, domestic air fares for Diwali are already up by around 30% across airlines.
A return trip, which was available for Rs7,000, now costs Rs12,000-13,000. The rates, said industry observers, are changing fast with airlines trying to cover operational costs.
A round trip from Mumbai to Delhi would cost Rs11,000-12,000 around the Diwali weekend. The same flights were available for Rs8,000 about a week ago. A Mumbai-Kolkata trip would come to Rs14,000-16,000 if booked now. Travel experts said the demand for Diwali has barely geared up and fares have already hit a high.
