Kochi: The woes of Keralite air passengers to and from the Gulf found an echo in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday with M. Achuthan raising the issue saying that the airline companies were fleecing the hapless passengers by jacking up fares in the peak season.
He said Air India Express, which was supposed to offer lower fare, was no exception. The airliners have raised the fares from Rs 5,000 to Rs 30,000. Those who wanted to come to Kerala on Onam vacation too have been put to hardship this way, he said.
However, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation K. C. Venugopal replied that it was natural for the airfares to go up when the demand peaks. When contacted by DC, an airline company official said that the industry follows dynamic pricing and that there was nothing unnatural in the fares going up.
