Expand Belgaum airport: MPs

Belgum: In wake of rising demand from people of this border city and neighbouring towns for introduction of domestic flights to all major cities in the country, three Members of Parliament from the district called on Union civil aviation minister Ajit Singh in New Delhi and requested him to expand the airport at Sambra, near here, as well as introduce flights to all domestic destinations.
Prabhakar Kore, Suresh Angadi and Ramesh Katti briefed Singh about facilities available in Belgaum for more flights. They said the state government has already allotted more than 370 acres for expansion of the airport located 12 km away from the city.
As per the demand of Airports Authority of India (AAI), the government provided land but construction was delayed, they said adding that Singh’s ministry should take steps to extend the runway and provide additional facilities at the airport.
One of the oldest airports in Karnataka, it also has night-landing facility, they told the minister. “Spicejet is ready to introduce flights from Belgaum and Mumbai in response to the demand of people of the region but the company is awaiting permission of authorities in Mumbai airport for the same.
