Flying gets costlier in festive season

Chennai: Travelling for an extended weekend during Onam and Diwali is going to be expensive as air fare has shot up due to an increase in price of aviation turbine fuel. A one way ticket costs 19,000 to 26,000 on Chennai-Mumbai evening flight on Friday while fare stands at 20,000 for evening flight to Delhi. As Monday is a holiday, many people are travelling home for an extended weekend. One day advance fares have shot up by more than 90% from last week .
Air fares have increased by 15% to 25% between Chennai and Trivandrum, Bangalore, Kochi, Hyderabad, Madurai and also on the Delhi and Mumbai routes for advance booking as well. "We were hoping to get good bookings for Onam over the next weekend because trains were full and air fares were affordable even when booked at the last minute," said Prema Radhakrishnan of Emerald Airways.
