Gold smuggling case: Fayas well-connected frequent flier

Kochi: The initial inquiry by customs and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into gold smuggling through the Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) has revealed that kingpin Fayas was a frequent flier who maintained close relation with customs personnel.
Top sources told TOI that Fayas flew in and out of the Nedumbassery airport at least once a week. "We have evidence that he has used Karipur and Thiruvananthapuram airports for his operations. He has made many of our colleagues friends and flaunted his contacts to impress them," a senior officer said.
Fayas' 'list' of friends includes Jikkumon Jacob, former aide of chief minister Oommen Chandy; Sunil Jacob, SP, crime records bureau and junior film stars. In fact, Jikkumon has commented on Fayas' Facebook posts. Another post shows Sunil Jacob striking a macho pose on Fayas' imported bike bearing Maharashtra registration. The officials of CBI Kochi unit started the inquiry following reports that Fayas had used his influence in the customs department to facilitate the exit of the two women who tried to carry gold through the green channel.
