Gold worth Rs 3.6 crore seized at Goa airport

Panaji: In the biggest seizure in the history of the commissionerate of central excise and customs in Goa, the air intelligence unit officials at Dabolim international airport detained two Sri Lankan nationals and seized 12 gold bars of one kg each totally worth 3.60 crore.
Customs officials did not rule out the possibility of gold smuggling at Dabolim airport on a daily basis as gold prices in India are soaring. Compared to the price of gold in Dubai, 12 kg gold in India would cost 42 lakh extra, customs sources said.
Customs officials also uncovered a novel method of smuggling gold where the person who finally alighted from the aircraft with the gold would be a domestic passenger and hence beyond the customs net. Explaining the operation, Customs commissioner V P C Rao said it was the suspicious movements of a passenger who came to Goa on the flight as a domestic passenger having boarded the flight in Mumbai that led to the gold seizure.
