Kochi airport on high alert for fatal MERS CoV

Nedumbassery: Based on the warnings issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Cochin International Airport has decided to implement precautionary measures against the threat of MERS CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus) which is said to be potentially fatal, said a notification issued by the airport.
According to the notification, the first viral attack had been confirmed in April 2012 in Saudi Arabia. Most cases reported since that have been in the Middle East, including Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Tunisia in North Africa. In Europe, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy have been reported as affected.
In confirmed MERS CoV cases, patients show symptoms of influenza which worsens gradually and might lead to death. Experts have commented that the said virus comes from the same family of viruses as SARS which had killed almost 775 people worldwide in just nine months during 2002-2003, after its beginning in China.
