After witnessing a healthy 5.6% y-o-y rise in May 2013, the growth in total air passenger traffic slowed down in June. In June 2013, total passenger traffic at Indian airports rose by a modest 2.4% as compared to that in the year-ago month. When compared to the preceding month, passenger traffic declined by a sharp 8.4% in June 2013. The fall in passenger traffic during the month, however, is not a cause of concern as every year in the month of June, passenger traffic witnesses a seasonal fall, said a report by Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) which published this data.
As per the report, airports in India carried 13.9 million passengers in June 2013 vis-a-vis 13.6 million passengers handled in June 2012. A decline in domestic air passenger traffic, which accounted for 72.2%, impacted the growth in overall air passenger traffic in June 2013. During the month, domestic air passenger traffic fell by 1.5% to 10 million passengers. Among the six major airports (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Hyderabad), domestic air passenger traffic fell the steepest in Kolkata, by 7.1%. Hyderabad and Delhi airport each recorded around 6-7% fall in domestic air passenger traffic.
