Ready to fly scorpions, spiders seized from cargo

Chennai: When air customs officials received a tip on Friday evening that there was something fishy about a few wooden boxes in the cargo section, they didn't expect scorpions and giant spiders. The creatures were found wriggling in polythene bags packed in six boxes marked for the Philippines and Italy.
Smuggling of live animals and animal parts has been rampant at Chennai airport which is a busy port to the Far East. On Saturday, officials found 14 black scorpions and two giant spiders in the air mail consignment without proper labelling. It was addressed to a person called Fernando, with the address '227 Rizal Ave Express, Grace Park, Philippines.' The other consignment was marked to 'Daizottilorisn Sowamaria, 95/11, Arcvgnan, Vicenzg, Italy.' Officials said the sender's addresses were not properly mentioned.
