Staff shortage hits customs department at Cochin airport

Kochi: The Customs Department at the International Airport at Nedumbassery here, is reeling under staff shortage, which is being exploited by smuggling rackets.
With the limited number of officers, the department has managed to bust several attempts to smuggle gold. Several gold bars worth crores were thus seized recently. The increasing number of seizures indicates that smuggling through Nedumbassery airport has shot up dramatically.
The department has only 15 officers at present to manage 8,000-odd passengers who exit through the airport every day. “We are facing a staff shortage right now, which makes it difficult to scan all those who alight from flights.
