Thane chopper was deployed to carry RBI cash to red zone

Nagpur:  The ill-fated helicopter that crashed in Thane was heading for Nagpur and supposed to take off on a mission into the Naxalite zone in neighbouring Chhattisgarh from here. Since at least three years, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been using helicopters to fly currency notes into pockets of Chhattisgarh affected by rebel activity.
The Bell-212 chopper was scheduled to take off on Monday, and take a few more sorties during the coming fortnight. This is a routine exercise taken up by the RBI in every 2-3 months.
However, authorities at RBI as well as the airport remained tight-lipped over the issue. It was confirmed at the airport that the helicopter was supposed to land at Nagpur, but no further details were divulged. The RBI's regional director Phulan Kumar said the bank had nothing to do with the incident.
