Vijayawada: With the Centre deciding to bifurcate the state, the demand for upgrading the Gannavaram airport to an international airport is gaining momentum.
Andhra Chamber of Commerce and Industry president M. Muralikrishna on Friday appealed to the Chief Minister to take the initiative to develop the Gannavaram airport by allotting necessary land on a priority basis.
The Chamber’s appeal came in the backdrop of rumours that the new capital could possibly be set up between Vijayawada and Guntur cities.
Though the airport caters to the needs of air travellers of six districts, the government has failed allot the necessary land.
Expressing concern over the tardy progress of the work, Muralikrishna said that the state government had entered into an MoU with the Airports Authority of India in 2007 for the development of the Gannavaram airport. The government promised to allot the land required.
