52 high-definition CCTV cameras to make Chennai airport safer

Chennai: The city police have installed 52 high definition pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras on the airport premises to tighten security.
The new cameras which replace outdated CCTV cameras of lesser pixel quality, can zoom in on a person about 200 metres away.
"These cameras have helped in solving three recent incidents, including an assault case reported outside the Chennai airport," said a police officer.
After the kidnap of Sril Lankan-origin British couple Ganapathy Pillai Thavaraja and his wife Jalaja Thavaraja by a gang on May 29, police commissioner S George reviewed security arrangements at the airport. Seeing that the images captured by the old cameras were not good enough to identify the abductors, police decided to replace some of them and add more state-of-the-art equipment.
