Airlines cheer as festival rush sends airfares soaring in Jaipur

Jaipur: With Diwali festival approaching, the airfares have started soaring. Besides advanced bookings, rising cost of air turbine fuel is also playing its part in hiking the airfares.
In fact, the fares have become so high for the coming days that travelling to Bangalore, Pune or Hyderabad is costing the same as travelling to Dubai. For example, on Jaipur-Bangalore route which is expected to witness high passenger traffic during Diwali and afterwards, the airfares of budget airlines like Indigo and SpiceJet are between Rs9,000 and Rs10,000. Till a few days back, the fares on this route were between Rs6,000 and Rs8,000.
The fares of premier carriers like Air India and Jet are on the higher side, said a travel agent.
“We are anticipating a huge increase in the number of passengers travelling to cities like Mumbai, Kolkata etc in the coming days. Predictions are based on previous trends,” said an official of state-owned Indian Airlines. “It’s that time of the year when most professionals from cities like Mumbai and Bangalore return home. Therefore, flights are jam-packed and fares are high,” said another travel agent. The fares to other cities like Chennai, Kolkata, and Srinagar are also rising.
