The Delhi-Bangalore Air India Boeing Dreamliner, involved in a near-miss after a panel from the fuselage fell off mid-air, is now back in operation. But the plane — a brand new Dreamliner — from which the panel was taken to put flight AI803 back in operation has been grounded. Engineers are now waiting for spares to arrive from the US to put the plane in the air.
A preliminary enquiry by DGCA officials into the fuselage panel falling off on Saturday reveals that a riveting flaw could be a possible cause for the incident. The panel, located between the main landing gears, covers the heater exchange equipment. Since returning to Delhi on Saturday night, the Dreamliner, registered as VT ANA, was kept in the hanger and an extensive check was carried out over two days.
"As the missing panel was an original part, the entire aircraft was subject to an X-ray scan for any possible problem," an engineer of the national carrier said. "The aircraft will resume commercial operations for the first time (since Saturday's incident) on the Delhi-Kolkata route on Wednesday."
