Ajit Singh backs AI disinvestment

New Delhi:  Aviation minister Ajit Singh is in favour of disinvestment in Air India but with less than six months left for general elections, he says the next government will have to take a call on this issue. The minister says UPA had earlier decided to extend Rs 30,000-crore package to AI over next nine years as the airline's condition was such that it could not have found any takers.
"Now the situation (in AI) has changed a lot and the airline will easily get investors. It has got a huge asset base and an army of trained manpower like pilots and engineers. Revenue collection, load factors and on time performance have gone up and loss-making routes have been slashed. AI was kept out of the purview for the recently-allowed FDI. But reversing this will be a minor thing once it is decided to divest in AI," Singh said.
