Equipment crisis looms on Kolkata airport

Kolkata: Safety concerns may force the shutdown of Kolkata airport if the staff handling maintenance and repair of communication, navigation and surveillance (CNS) decide to lay their hands off the equipment.
The Airports Authority Officers' Association has shot off a letter to civil aviation minister Ajit Singh, warning that from October 14, the CNS department will not take responsibility of any equipment installed after 2008.
"We will not sabotage the functioning of radars and other CNS equipment at airports. But should there be a snag and an equipment cease to function after October 14, we will not touch it till our demand for additional manpower and proper training is met," said AAOA general secretary Y P Gautam, adding that they are critically short-staffed.
