International freight movement increases at Ahmedabad airport

Ahmedabad: Though gold and silver imports may have gone drastically low but cargo movement continues to grow at Sardar Vallabhbhai International airport. City airport recorded a growth of 7.1 percent in total freight movement in July 2013 including international as well as domestic.
In case of international freight movement, city airport handled 1360 metric tonnes of cargo in July 2013 compared to 1187 MT last year, a growth of 14.1 percent. At the domestic front, Ahmedabad airport saw an increase of 6.6 percent.
"Most of the cargo is carried by airlines operating out of gulf countries. The increase in movement can be attributed to better connectivity. As for domestic, mostly the movement is to Mumbai and Delhi", said Samir Mankad, director, Gujarat State Cargo Exports Ltd (GSECL).
