Mumbai: Mumbai and Delhi still rule the roost in the domestic aviation market but the share of two airports in overall traffic is falling. In 2006-07 the two airports collectively handled 40.6% of all domestic passengers and share has come down to 37% in 2012-13.
While Delhi's share has more or less remained constant between 19-20% it declined marginally last year. Mumbai's share in national traffic saw a decline 21.1% to 17.4% in the six year period.
While both the airports have seen a growth in both domestic and international traffic over the six period their share in overall figure shows a negative growth alluding to faster rate of growth in other airports.
Mumbai airport did not respond to a query on declining share in national traffic. A Delhi airport spokesperson said the closure of Kingfisher Airlines (led to Delhi losing out around 85,000 domestic seats per week) and economic slowdown were reasons for the decline in numbers.
