Thiruvananthapuram: The residents of Kochuthoppu village, near Shangumugham, are planning to launch a protest against the newly-built Aviation Fuel Storage facility of the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL).
The facility, which is yet to start functioning, is a centre for the storage and distribution of aviation turbine fuel and lubricants to the airlines at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport.
“Kochuthoppu is a densely-populated fishing village. The land on which the facility is constructed was leased from a private owner. There are households within a 50-metre circumference of the facility. There is a high school on the other side of the road which is not more than 25 metres away. Constructing such a facility in the area is putting all these people under grave danger,” said Valiyathura ward councillor Tony Oliver.
