Tiruchy-bound passengers stranded in Chennai for 10 hours

Chennai: If ever there’s a bad day of the week for your flight to develop a technical snag at the Chennai Airport, it’s definitely Tuesday. Owing to the runway maintenance exercise that is carried out every Tuesday between 2 pm and 4.30 pm and a technical snag on a SpiceJet aircraft, Tiruchy-bound passengers touched down at the Rock City 10 hours after they reached the airport. What’s worse, the exercise of bringing in a spare plane also stopped another flight to Calicut from taking off before the runway was closed - leaving another set of passengers antsy.
According to airport sources, 43 passengers who were booked to fly on SG 3165 to Tiruchy, had reached the airport well before their check-in time of 9.30 am for the flight that was scheduled to leave an hour later. “After they were cleared for boarding, the engineers realised that there was a snag with the turboprop aircraft (Bombardier) and so they were asked to return to the security lounge by 11 am,” said an airport official. SpiceJet officials confirmed that they were unable to address the snag before noon, owing to which a spare Boeing 737 was commissioned to do the Tiruchy run.
