Air India air hostess, friend smuggled 32 kg gold

Kozhikode: Air India air hostess Hiromas Sebastian and her friend Rahila Chellai, arrested on Friday in connection with the smuggling of six kg of gold through the Calicut International Airport at Karipur, were involved in smuggling 32 kg of gold worth Rs 11 crore in the past five months, according to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials.
The duo also smuggled gold through Kochi and Chennai international airports, the officials told reporters here on Saturday.
They said that the two were only carriers and that the actual persons behind the smuggling racket remained still at large. “There is no evidence that Hiromas Sebastian had used her position as an air hostess to facilitate smuggling,“ said an official. Rahila Chellai, who initiated Hiromas into the network, had reportedly smuggled over 40 kg of gold on various occasions.
