Air India’s former director, commercial Deepak Brara gets 6-month extension

Mumbai: Deepak Brara, Air India's former director, commercial, has been given a six-month extension in the company to spearhead the airline's pitch to become a member of Star Alliance.
"He has been redesignated as the OSD, International Affairs, with a special focus on Star Alliance," said a spokesman at the national carrier.
Air India's membership application in the 28-member alliance was suspended in 2011 because the carrier hadn't met all the requirement. The alliance currently has no Indian airline as its member.
Air India's entry into the alliance is crucial for the airline to enhance its international footprint, to take on the massive competition from international carriers such as Singapore Airlines and AirAsia that are setting up local units in the country and Etihad Airways which is expected to veer away Indian traffic after its strategic tie-up with Jet Airways.
