Airport privatisation hits house panel air pocket

New Delhi: The Civil Aviation Ministry’s proposal to privatise six airports on a revenue-share model with the state-owned Airport Authority of India (AAI), is likely to run into rough weather as a parliamentary panel is understood to have opposed the move. AAI had issued Request For Qualification (RFQ) for selection of private bidders to operate and maintain Chennai and Lucknow airports in September. Subsequently RFQs were issued for Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Guwahati and Kolkata airports. Sources said AAI already held a meeting with potential bidders on Friday last week.
“Friday’s meeting was disrupted by the AAI union opposing the move and also some potential bidders did not carry the requisite document, which was why the presentation was postponed,” sources said.
The Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture, headed by Sitaram Yechury, is understood to have recommended a joint venture with operators instead of handing over the airport to private company.
