Kolkata: Over 100 air passengers from Delhi had a narrow escape on Saturday night when an adult jackal strayed into the runway while their plane was landing.
Given that a collision with a bird weighing around a kilogram can ground an aircraft, a full-blown impact with a jackal weighing several kilos can be of disastrous consequence. The jackal died from impact after being flung away by the thrust of the aircraft's powerful jet engine.
The incident happened around 9.30pm when an Indigo flight from Delhi touched down at Kolkata. It isn't quite clear if the pilot saw the jackal before touchdown or felt the impact as the jackal momentarily came in the way of the engine's thrust, but he reported the matter to the air traffic controller. As per protocol, the runway was shut down for investigation.
