Mumbai : While the Navi Mumbai Airport project-affected people is going to get the relief package in crores, the project-affected people (PAP) of Chipi Airport got only peanuts. When the compensation for Navi Mumbai PAPs will amount to more than Rs 20 crore per hectare, the PAPs of Chipi Airport received just Rs 1,500 per hectare. The State government’s injustice to them is evident from the fact that their compensation was fixed as per the rate prevalent in 1966.
Chipi Airport PAPs are small in number and have no effective leader to drive home their point. Moreover, there is no unity among themselves. All these factors resulted in gross injustice to them. The Union government had declared Sindhudurg as a tourism district, the first one in Maharashtra, along with other sites in 1997. But efforts to lure tourists to the district that boasts of scenic beaches and forts by creating the requisite infrastructure, have been slow.
