DGCA wants deskies, finds no takers

Mumbai: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India's aviation regulator, is struggling to plug the loopholes ahead of a second audit by the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) scheduled after two weeks.
The FAA has threatened to downgrade India's air safety rankings following a safety audit in September, which threw up 33 deficiencies including lack of adequate manpower and absence of key safety manuals. The FAA said it would conduct a second audit in December before taking a call on downgrading the DGCA safety ranking.
The audit especially mentioned the lack of adequate flight operations inspectors, resulting in the DGCA inviting applications to recruit about 20 pilots as senior flight operations inspectors and flight operations inspectors.
Sources said the response from the pilots has been "lukewarm to say the least". The flight operations inspector's job requires pilots to take up a desk job, which not many are willing to take up, the source said, forcing the DGCA to extend the deadline to apply for the posts by four days to November 29.
